As you leave the village, your walk heads uphill and into the thick forest that covers the national park.

The Elbe is one of the great rivers of Europe, flowing from the distant hills of the Czech Republic, through your walk and on across the whole of northern Germany.

The Polenz River also features on this walk and its impressive gorge leads you through the local sandstone. It takes you to the medieval village of Hohnstein which overlooks the national park.

This is the walk’s turning point, as it now heads back across the river gorge and through the forest to the appealing waters of Amselsee, and the romance of its hidden waterfall.

One final climb is all that’s left to bring me back to the Elbe… And to the highpoint of Saxon Switzerland… the unique and stunning Bastei Bridge.

Julia’s Verdict: I’m already thinking that for UK walkers at least, this might just be Germany’s best kept secret.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
